Typing special characters

To type a special character, such as a number, a punctuation mark, or an uppercase letter, do any of the following:
Character
On a virtual keyboard
On a physical keyboard
Uppercase
Do one of the following:
  • Tap The shift key, and then tap a letter.
  • Touch and hold the letter.
To turn on CAP lock, touch and hold The shift key.
Do one of the following:
  • Press The shift key, and then press a letter.
  • Press and hold the letter.
To turn on CAP lock, press and hold The shift key.
Number or symbol
  1. Tap
    ?123

  2. To see more numbers and symbols, tap The more symbols icon.
  3. Tap a number or symbol.
  1. Press the
    Sym
    key.
  2. To see more numbers and symbols, press the
    Sym
    key again.
  3. Press the key that corresponds to the symbol that you want to insert.
Slide the keyboard to access the number pad
  1. Touch and hold the keyboard.
  2. Touch and hold the keyboard, and slide the keyboard from right to left.
If you swap the location of the quick phrases and the number pad, slide the keyboard left to right to access the number pad.

Accent
  1. Touch and hold the letter that you want to add the accent to.
  2. Slide your finger onto the character that you want to insert.
  3. Lift your finger.
  1. Press and hold the letter that you want to add the accent to.
  2. When characters appear on the screen above the keyboard, tap the character that you want to insert.
Alternate character on a key
Press the
Alt
key, and then press a key. To quickly type multiple alternate characters in a row, press the
Alt
key twice.
