Upgrade BlackBerry UEM version 12.19 and later to BlackBerry UEM version 12.21
BlackBerry UEM
version 12.19 and later to BlackBerry UEM
version 12.21- If you are upgrading multiple instances ofBlackBerry UEM, see Upgrade a domain that consists of multiple instances of BlackBerry UEM.
- When you extract the setup files, ensure that they are not saved to theUEMsoftware installation directory (by default, C:\Program Files\BlackBerry\UEM). During an upgrade, the setup application removes the contents of theUEMsoftware directory, including its own installation files.
- It is a best practice to take a manual backup of theUEMdatabase before you upgrade in case the account that you use for database authentication does not have enough permissions to perform a database backup.
- If you are upgrading your environment in stages, test your environment after each stage of the upgrade to make sure everything is working as expected. If it is not, resolve any issues before proceeding to the next stage of the upgrade.
- During the upgrade process, you have the option to switch theUEMservices from running using a standardWindowsservice account to a group Managed Service Account (gMSA), or from using a gMSA to a standardWindowsservice account. You specify the service account or gMSA that you want to use during the upgrade process.
- If you want to use a gMSA to run theUEMservices, you must create and configure the gMSA and verify that it is available on the computer that hosts theUEMservices. When usingWindowsauthentication, the gMSA requires access rights for theMicrosoft SQL Server. For more information about creating and configuring a gMSA, see Windows Server: Get started with Group Managed Service Accounts.
- If you want to switch theUEMservices to use a gMSA, before you run the upgrade process, useWindowsServices Manager to manually switch one of theUEMservices to use the gMSA. After you verify that the service runs as expected, you can use the upgrade process to switch allUEMservices to use the gMSA.
- After you run theUEMsetup application, it may display a warning that a restart is required. Restart the computer to ensure that the software is updated.
- Log in to the computer using the service account that runs theUEMservices.
- Copy theUEM.zip file to the computer and extract the contents to a folder.Do not copy used installation files from another computer. You must re-extract the installation files on each computer.
- In the extracted folder, double-clicksetup.exe.If aWindowsmessage appears and requests permission for setup.exe to make changes to the computer, clickYes.
- In theLanguage selectiondialog box, select your language.
- ClickOK.
- ClickNext.

The setup application will automatically installMicrosoft .NET Framework4.8 if it is not detected on the computer. If a later version ofMicrosoft .NET Frameworkis already installed, theUEMsetup application does not installMicrosoft .NET Framework4.8.
- In theService accountdialog box, do one of the following:
- If you want to use aWindowsservice account, type theWindowspassword and clickNext.
- If you want to use a gMSA, select theUse managed service accountcheck box. Specify the gMSA username using this format:<domain>\<group_managed_service_account>$.
