Installing the Chalk Pushcast Software behind a firewall

You can install the Chalk™ Pushcast™ Software behind your organization's firewall to maintain and manage security, user accounts, and manage content locally. If a Chalk Pushcast Software user in your organization wants to send content to a BlackBerry® device, the user must select the Mobile Only or Both (Desktop and Mobile) delivery method. The Chalk Pushcast Software sends an encrypted email message with the content delivery instructions to the BlackBerry device before it sends the content.

The Chalk Pushcast Software also communicates with devices to track the progress of Chalk Pushcast Player users as they view content and complete tests or surveys. The Chalk Pushcast Software communicates with the devices in the following ways, depending on the network connection that the Chalk Pushcast Player user configures in the Chalk Pushcast Player:
  • Between a device and the Chalk Pushcast Software through the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service
  • Between a device and the Chalk Pushcast Software through the BlackBerry® Internet Service or TCP.

When the network connection for a device is BlackBerry Internet Service or TCP, the Chalk Pushcast Player must have access to the Chalk Pushcast Software server using an HTTPS connection over port 80. To provide the Chalk Pushcast Player with access to the Chalk Pushcast Software, you must permit inbound HTTPS traffic through the organization's firewall to the Chalk Pushcast Software server.

Alternatively, you can place the Chalk Pushcast Software server in a DMZ that permits inbound HTTPS traffic from devices that use the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service and devices that use the BlackBerry Internet Service or TCP. You can only establish communication between devices and the Chalk Pushcast Software through the TCP if the Chalk Pushcast Player is installed on devices that are running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.2.1 to 4.2.107.

To support Chalk Pushcast Software that you install on many devices or that you install for Chalk Pushcast Player users that use multimedia content extensively, you can install a media transcoding server that runs with the Chalk Pushcast Software server.
