BlackBerry Screen Reader gestures
The BlackBerry Screen Reader uses a combination of gestures that are used in other apps on your BlackBerry device and gestures that are specific to the BlackBerry Screen Reader. Gestures that start at the edges of the screen (such as swiping down from the top to access Settings or swiping up from the bottom to minimize an app) are the same in the Screen Reader app as they are in all other apps. However, there are additional gestures that will help you navigate when the BlackBerry Screen Reader is turned on.
|Set and speak the point of regard
Note: A point of regard can be a field, button, selection area, link, application, paragraph, sentence, word, title, image, or any other display feature.
|Tap with one finger.|
|Access Discovery mode
Note: Discovery mode enables you to interact with points of regard, such as letters, words, buttons, links, menu items, and pictures. These points of regard are highlighted on the display.
|Tap and hold with one finger, then move your finger. The point of regard is set to the object under your finger.|
|Read description of the point of regard||Tap with two fingers.|
|Activate a point of regard
Note: When you activate a point of regard, you are indicating that you want to interact with that part of the display.
|Double-tap with one finger.|
|Select an item||Triple-tap with one finger.|
|Press and hold||Double-tap and hold.|
|Navigate to the previous or next point of regard||Swipe left with one finger to go to the next point; swipe right with one finger to go to the previous point.|
|Pan or scroll a list||Swipe up with two fingers to scroll toward the top; swipe down with two fingers to scroll toward the bottom.|
|Go to the top or bottom of a display area||Swipe up with two fingers and hold to go to the top; swipe down and hold with two fingers to scroll to the bottom.|
|Change slider value||Swipe up with one finger to increase the slider value; swipe down with one finger to decrease the slider value.|
|Move to the previous or next section of text (such as a character, word, line, sentence, or paragraph) or web content (such as headings and links).||Swipe left with one finger to go to the previous text or content; swipe right with one finger to go to the next text or content.|
|Change the text or web content size||Swipe up with one finger while in the content to increase the size; swipe down with one finger while in the content to decrease the size.|
|Move left, right, up, or down||Swipe left, right, up, or down with three fingers.|
|Stop the BlackBerry Screen Reader from reading that point of focus||Swipe down and then to the left with one finger.|
|Perform the default action of the application (such as take a picture with the Camera app, or start and stop a video in the Video app)||Double-tap with two fingers.|
|Mute the BlackBerry Screen Reader||Swipe down and to the left with two fingers.|
|Read the time and date||Quickly swipe down and then slide up with one finger.|
|Read the status bar information (including battery and radio connectivity)||Quickly swipe up and then slide down with one finger.|
Using BlackBerry Screen Reader Quick Settings mode
With the Quick Settings mode, you can change frequently changed settings and access additional BlackBerry Screen Reader features. When you enter Quick Settings mode, you have 3 seconds to complete a task. If you don't complete a task, the device automatically exits the mode, and vibrates briefly to notify you. When you enter Quick Settings mode, a vertical list of tasks appears. You can use the following gestures to interact with the list.
|Access Quick Settings mode||Swipe down and to the right with one finger|
|Select an item||Tap with one finger. After the selection is made, the device exits Quick Settings mode.|
|Switch on or switch off an item||Tap with one finger to turn on or turn off the switch. After 3 seconds, the device automatically exits Quick Settings mode.|
|Select an item from a list||Tap with one finger to move between the choices. Each tap moves you to the next choice. When you get to the last item in the list, the next tap returns to the top of the list. After 3 seconds, the device automatically exits Quick Settings mode.|
|Select an item from a list using Discovery mode||Tap and hold with one finger. Drag the finger up or down the list, then tap with a second finger to select a list item. The device does not automatically exit Quick Settings mode.|
|Change speech volume||Swipe up with one finger to increase the volume. Swipe down with one finger to decrease the volume.|
|Change speech verbosity||Tap with one finger to change the verbosity level. Levels to choose from are either High or Low.|
|Change speech speed||Swipe left with one finger to decrease the speech rate. Swipe right with one finger to increase the speech rate.|
|Rewind speech||Swipe up and down to replay the last ten spoken items.|
|Spell the word||Swipe left to spell the last item spoken letter by letter. Swipe right to phonetically spell the last item (for example, Alpha, Bravo, and so on). Spelling can also be used with Rewind to spell the last ten spoken items.|
Using BlackBerry Screen Reader gestures in the BlackBerry Calendar, Phone app, and BlackBerry Hub
There are specific BlackBerry Screen Reader gestures you can use in the BlackBerry Calendar app.
|Move to the next day, week, or month||Swipe to the right with three fingers.|
|Move to the previous day, week, or month||Swipe to the left with three fingers.|
There are specific BlackBerry Screen Reader gestures you can use in the Phone app.
|Answer a phone call||Double-tap with two fingers on the incoming call screen.|
|Ignore a phone call||Double-tap and hold with two fingers on the incoming call screen.|
|Hang up the phone||Double-tap and hold with two fingers anywhere on the device screen.|
There is a specific BlackBerry Screen Reader gesture you can use in the BlackBerry Hub.
|Delete the user-friendly form of an email address from the To or CC fields of messages.||Tap to select the address, then swipe to the left with three fingers.|
Using the BlackBerry Screen Reader on the home screen
When you're on the home screen, you can use these additional BlackBerry Screen Readergestures.
|Switch between the work and personal workspaces||Swipe down near the right side of the screen using three fingers.|
|Minimize the application and show your Active Frames||Swipe up from the bottom. This is the same as the gesture used outside the BlackBerry Screen Reader.|
|Close an Active Frame||Tap and hold with one finger, then move your finger to the app. The point of regard is set under your finger. Then, double-tap with two fingers to close the app.|
|Delete an app on the home screen||Tap with one finger to select the item you want to delete. Tap and hold with one finger to enter the home screen delete mode. Double-tap with two fingers to delete the app.|
Using BlackBerry Screen Reader gestures with the BlackBerry Keyboard
The BlackBerry Screen Reader uses a few additional gestures with the BlackBerry Keyboard.
|Switch the keyboard layout||Swipe down with one finger.|
|Accept word prediction||Swipe up with one finger.|
|Delete a word (for languages that read left to right)||Swipe from right to left with two fingers.|
|Delete a word (for languages that read right to left)||Swipe from left to right with two fingers.|
