BlackBerry Messenger

About updating your applications

Updating the applications on your BlackBerry smartphone can offer you the following benefits:
  • access to new features
  • resolve a technical issue

You can download applications from the BlackBerry App World storefront. For more information about the BlackBerry App World storefront, on a computer visit www.blackberry.com/appworld.

If you need help using an application, you can find answers in the application by pressing the Menu key and clicking Help on your smartphone.

Requirements

  • At least 5.5 MB of available application storage
  • BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later
  • A wireless service data plan

Depending on your wireless service provider or organization, you might not be able to use BlackBerry Messenger.

New features

The new features and enhancements for BlackBerry Messenger 7.0 include the following items:

BBM Voice

You can now participate in voice chats over a Wi-Fi connection.

In BBM, an icon at the top of the chat screen indicates if the contact is available for a voice chat. When you receive a voice chat request, a distinct sound let's you know that someone wants to talk.

To start a voice chat, in a chat, do one of the following:
  • Press the Send key on your BlackBerry smartphone.
  • Click the voice chat icon at the top of the screen.
  • Select the option from the menu.

(Requires BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later.)

More emoticons

Express yourself using over a dozen new emoticons.

Backup and restore changes

Your BBM contacts, profile, and group memberships can now be automatically backed up over the wireless network based on your BlackBerry ID.

Once you associate a BlackBerry ID with BBM, other backup and restore options including BlackBerry Desktop Software are no longer available for BBM. To restore your BBM data on your current or a new smartphone, you can use the same BlackBerry ID that you associated with BBM.

Fixed issues

This section lists fixed issues for BBM 7.0 and 7.0.1.

General

You might not hear an outgoing voice chat in your headset or Bluetooth device.

You might not be able to answer a BBM Voice chat using a Bluetooth device, such as a headset.

If you’re using BlackBerry 7.0 and your smartphone supports NFC technology, in BBM you might not have the option to add a contact by tapping and NFC options might not display.

If the display language on your BlackBerry smartphone is set to Arabic or Hebrew, brackets around text might not display correctly.

Known issues

This section lists known issues for BBM 7.0.1.

General

If you change your BBM options to replace contacts pictures with BBM pictures, you might not be able to unlink a BBM contact from your address book.

After highlighting an animated display picture in your contact list, the picture might turn white instead of showing the picture.

If you click your display name at the top of your contact list and add an emoticon to the beginning of your name, you might not be able to scroll down to the Personal Message field.

Workaround: You can open your profile to edit your personal message.

If you're using BlackBerry 7.1 and turn child protection on, when you turn child protection off, display pictures in BBM stop animating.

Workaround: Restart your smartphone to see your animated display pictures again.

If you answer an invitation question incorrectly, the invitation remains in your Pending contacts list even though you cannot change your answer.

Workaround: You can manually delete the invitation and ask the person to invite you again.

You might not be able to delete a contact while a multiperson chat with that contact is open.

Workaround: Leave the multiperson chat and try deleting the contact again.

If you set the Show Recent Updates option to None, recent updates might still display.

Emoticons, including flags, that are in a contact or group member's display name might not appear correctly outside of chats and group chats.

BBM Voice

If you are running an older version of BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 on a BlackBerry Storm 9520, BlackBerry Storm 9550, or BlackBerry Bold 9000, you might not be able to connect to a voice chat.

Workaround: You must update your BlackBerry Device Software to a newer version of 5.0 before you can use this feature. For more information, search the Knowledge Base for KB 33898.

If the other person starts a voice chat with you and disconnects from a Wi-Fi network, the voice chat might continue.

If you try to start a voice chat with a contact who disconnects from a Wi-Fi network, the calling screen might continue to appear on your screen for approximately five minutes.

While connecting to a voice chat, the speaker icon might change to a handset icon.

If you try to play a voicenote during a voice chat, the voicenote might not play.

In some cases, while connected to a mobile hotspot with a variable signal, you might not be able to start voice chats.

In some cases, if the other person disconnects from a voice chat, your voice chat session might continue.

If you accept a voice chat request from the Incoming Call screen and the request is about to expire, you might not be able to join the chat.

After plugging in a headset, the next voice chat might ring through your smartphone speakers instead of through your headset.

If you change the sound profile for BBM Voice chats, you might not see the default sound “Vibrant” in the list.

If you answer an incoming phone call while in a voice chat, you don’t see a warning that your voice chat will be ended.

Chats

If you’re using BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 and you receive a voice note in BBM, the voice note playback might be choppy and the length of the recording might not match what the sender recorded.

When recording a voice note in a multiperson chat, the recording limit is 35 seconds instead of 60 seconds.

After setting BBM to save your chat history, when you open a chat, the messages might scroll up suddenly.

If you turn off automatic voicenote recording and then click the Reply button for a voice note, it might still automatically start recording.

You might not be able to use the trackpad on your smartphone to click a website address.

Workaround: You can click the Get Link item from the menu or click the link using the touchscreen.

If you send a map location with a customize zoom and position, the contact might receive the original map instead.

If you forward a text message as a BBM message, you might not receive confirmation that the message has been sent.

If you forward a picture that you received to a contact over Bluetooth device, the recipient might receive a .tmp file rather than a .jpg. The recipient cannot view the picture.

Workaround: You can try saving the picture to your smartphone or to a media card before forwarding it.

You cannot send files to contacts in a multiperson chat.

Workaround: You can send files to contacts individually or you can share pictures within a group.

BBM Groups

After updating BBM, if you open a BBM Group message from the Messages app, you might see a preview window instead of the group chat.

Workaround: You can open BBM to view and respond to the group chat.

If you scan a group barcode when your administrator turns off BBM Groups, you might be able to join the group.

In some cases, after highlighting a group member, another group member’s display picture might change unexpectedly.

If you associate your current BBM with a BlackBerry ID and you have more than 30 groups in total, you only see 31 groups in BBM.

After restarting your smartphone, the icon for new group notifications might no longer appear in the Today view on the Home screen.

If you set your smartphone font size to 14, you might not be able to see the appointment name or calendar icon when sending the appointment to a BBM contact.

Workaround: Reduce the font size to 10 or smaller.

If the display language on your smartphone is set to Thai, accents in the Group Updates section might overlap each other.

You might not be able to post a comment on a picture if your comment is long and includes special characters, such as symbols and emoticons.

If a group member shares a picture after the picture limit for the group has been reached, the new picture replaces an older one but the picture counter might incorrectly update to one more than the group limit.

If you set the group option to save pictures that members share to a media card, and if you share a picture from the Camera application, an extra copy of the picture might appear on your media card.

Workaround: You can share pictures from the Pictures section of a group.

If you click View Calendar from a group update, the calendar incorrectly displays today’s date.

If you register an email address that uses a BlackBerry Enterprise Server with BBM, wipe your smartphone, add new contacts or groups, and register the email address with BBM again, your previous groups might not be recovered.

Workaround: You can try asking a person from the group to remove you from the group and re-invite you.
