Research In Motion recommends that you regularly create and save a backup file on your computer, especially before you update any software. Maintaining an up-to-date backup file on your computer might allow you to recover smartphone data or tablet data if your smartphone or tablet is lost, stolen, or corrupted by an unforeseen issue.

1. Connect your BlackBerry smartphone or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to your computer.
2. On your computer, in the Applications folder, click the BlackBerry Desktop Software icon.
3. Click the Back Up icon at the top of the screen.
4. Do one of the following:
   • To back up all smartphone data or tablet data, click All data.
   • To back up specific data, click Selected data. Select the checkbox beside one or more databases.
5. If necessary, do the following:
   • To change the name of your backup file, in the Backup File Name field, type a new file name.
   • To encrypt your smartphone data or tablet data, select the Encrypt backup file checkbox.
   • If your smartphone includes built-in media storage and you want to back up the files that are saved to this location, select the Back up built-in media storage checkbox. To perform this task, on your smartphone, mass storage mode must be turned on.
6. Click Back Up.
