About typing in Japanese

Your BlackBerry® device is designed to support five input modes for the Japanese input method: Hiragana, Katakana (full-width or half-width), and ASCII (full-width or half-width). You can switch between these input modes while you type by pressing the Right Shift key.To type Latin characters, you can use one of the ASCII input modes.

If the predictive mode is turned on, as you type text, a list of possible predictions appears on the screen. When you select a prediction from the list, your device also displays a list of predictions for the next word that you might type.

After you convert the word that you have typed to Kanji, if the conversion is not correct, you can change the conversion by changing the segmentation or selecting a different conversion from the list that appears when you press the Space key.

To facilitate typing long phrases quickly, your device provides the option to select a phrase from a list of common phrases that are divided into a number of categories, such as business or greeting.

Your device is also designed to support many Japanese symbols. The most common symbols appear in the symbol list on your device. You can type symbols that do not appear in the symbol list using the character codes that are available at www.blackberry.com/go/jptyping.
